Men’s Matterhorn and Cervino Speed Opening Races for the Audi FIS World Cup Have Been Canceled
The men’s downhill races of the Matterhorn Cervino Speed Opening were cancelled on Saturday after the final snow check by race director Hannes Trinkl and assistant Raimund Plancker (men) due to the lack of snow and the safety situation on the course. This occurred despite the best efforts of the organizing committee and their unwavering dedication. Despite this, the event planners are continuing to put in their maximum effort in order to ensure that the women’s races that are scheduled for November 5th and 6th, 2022 can go on as scheduled.
Today was the day that the final snow control for the men’s race was supposed to take place, but the weather conditions were not favorable. The slope that is located on the glacier is in good enough condition for the race, while the bottom portion of the route was impacted by heavy rain. Because the slope was not prepared for racing from the bottom of the glacier all the way to the finish line, and because the safety of the competitors could not be assured, the men’s races scheduled for Saturday, October 22, 2022, were called off. Tuesday, October 25, 2022 is the day that will see the completion of the snow control for the women’s races.
“Over the past few weeks and months, we have accomplished a great deal. We are prepared both logistically and organizationally for this. On the course, the crew saved everything for the final stretch so that we could also control the action on the lower portion of the racetrack. However, in the end, we have to acknowledge that nature will always be stronger than man, as stated by the President of the LOC, Franz Julen.

FIS acknowledges the organizers’ outstanding efforts
The FIS regrets the cancellation of the men’s race in the first cross-border downhill competition in World Cup history. Not only has the organizing committee accomplished tremendous things in the previous few days. Certainly, it was not their fault that the men’s races were canceled. The Matterhorn Cervino Speed Opening is a novel and innovative endeavor in which we continue to have faith. There is the prospect of a weather change. The organizers have till Tuesday to make a final decision regarding the women’s races, reveals FIS Secretary General Michel Vion.
