Formula One World Championship verstappen

Verstappen dislikes F1 sprint races due to a proposed format change

Posted on November 12, 2022

Max Verstappen, who has won the Formula One world championship twice, admitted that he is not a big fan of the sprint races, despite the fact that he has won both of the sprint races that have been held so far this season, as the sport discusses potential future format changes.

Sprint qualifying takes place on Friday to determine the starting grid for a race that will take place on Saturday. The top eight finishers in Saturday’s race will earn points, and those points will determine where the drivers will start in Sunday’s main event.

The Sao Paulo Grand Prix, which will take place in Brazil this coming weekend, will be the third sprint event of the year, with six more scheduled for the upcoming season.

At the Interlagos race, Verstappen told the media, “Honest to God, I’m just not a big fan of it.”

“It seems to me that we don’t really compete. There are a few points that you get, but you also know that you can’t really risk it because the main race is where you really get the points, so you can’t really take advantage of those points.

“Because you don’t make pit stops, you simply put on the tire that will keep you going for the entire race….

You won’t see a lot of cars passing each other unless there is a vehicle that is parked in the way.

“So then it’s not really that fun for me,” added the Red Bull driver, who has already clinched the championship with four races to spare and is going for his 15th win of the season on Sunday. He has a chance to win his 15th race of the season.

According to Verstappen

It was more beneficial for him to have just one practice session on Friday before qualifying, rather than the three that are typical for a grand prix.

In order to increase the amount of excitement that the sprint provides for spectators, Formula One is thinking about making it a separate competition from the Sunday starting grid in the future. The sprint was first introduced the previous year.

Although teams have had discussions on the topic, no decision has been made as of yet.

Although Formula One has announced that the 2023 season would have a record 24 events, the sanctioning body has not yet disclosed the locations of the sprint races.
