Lech Zürs battles the environment to host World Cup Parallel GS races

Posted on November 12, 2022

In contrast to the climate challenges faced by Lech Zurs Europe’s ski resorts, several of Colorado’s ski slopes often receive new snowfall and enjoy freezing weather. According to earlier reports, the FIS decided not to hold the season-opening downhills for the men’s and women’s categories in Zermatt-Cervinia. They did not experience the freezing temperatures necessary to produce sufficient snow to get to the bottom of the course.

According to all accounts, they attempted each and every viable solution in an effort to give the races the best possible chance of taking place.

In the meantime, Austria had the warmest October on record for the country. This problem presents a substantial obstacle for the people in charge of organizing the Parallel GS World Cup at Lech Zürs. In a little under two weeks, the event known as the “Flexenrace” is planned to take place.

Parallel GS World Cup at Lech Zürs take placed

The race for women is scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 12, while the event for men is scheduled to take place on Sunday, November 13. The finals will be held in the evening, while the qualification runs will both take place during the day. Assuming that the event can take place, the presence of the 4,000 people who are anticipated to attend would create an environment that is electric and unforgettable.

Snow farming is a good start, but it will not suffice

Recognizing the prevailing climatic conditions, the organizers stored a massive amount of snow in shady areas near the venue last spring. To preserve their winter resources, the organizers also covered the sheltered snow with an insulating layer of wood chips. As a result, this farmed snow serves as the foundation for preparing the race hill prior to the event.

The organizing committee started transporting snow from this snow depot to the event venue today. They are also hoping for a change in the weather to allow for the production of artificial snow. The organizers are aware, however, that the actual preparation of the race slope takes time and the cooperation of the weather. It would take 48 hours of cold temperatures to make enough snow to hold the race.

The organizers will take advantage of every chance to succeed

When the FIS performs its required snow control at the end of the week, several weather models indicate snow. Although the Lech Zürs World Cup crew is realistic, they will make every attempt to keep the races going: “This assignment will be difficult, but we’ll work until the very end to complete it.”
